moviejuice and The Mercury presents
TWO FILMS BY TRACEY MOFFATT:
Night Cries: A Rural Tragedy (1990) & Bedevil (1993)
Traversing photography, video installation and cinema, the works of the illustrious Tracey Moffatt stand out for their visual splendour, formal ambition and dense reckonings with Australian history.
moviejuice and The Mercury are extremely proud to be screening two of her most acclaimed film works: her 1990 short Night Cries: A Rural Tragedy, and 1993’s Bedevil, her only feature. In both, the ghosts of colonial pasts haunt Indigenous presents. Moffatt crafts a series of ravishing and terrifying hyperreal landscapes, all enshrouded by restless spirits and generational trauma.
Both playful and challenging in their own ways, Night Cries and Bedevil are essential and completely unique works from one of Australia’s boldest interdisciplinary artists, and remain shamefully undersung in the Australian film canon. Don’t miss a rare opportunity to see them on the cinema screen.
