The Support Association for the Women of Afghanistan presents:
A Film Night at the Mercury
Saturday 20 July 2024 at 7PM
Mercury Cinema
13 Morphett Street, Adelaide
SAWA Australia (SA) presents two uplifting films “Laughing in Afghanistan” directed by Anneta Papathanasiou and “Yellow” directed by Elham Ehsas.
The evening will start with the short film “Yellow”. This Oscar shortlisted film, powerfully deals with suppression in a beautifully subtle way. It tells the story of Laili, as she enters a shop to buy her first full body veil – the infamous Chadari. The film sheds light on the plight of Afghan women following the Taliban’s takeover.
As the feature film, SAWA is pleased to announce that we are partnering with GIFFA (Ghan International Film Festival Australia) for this event. GIFFA has obtained the film “Laughing in Afghanistan”, a feature-length film which tells the story of Karim Asir, the Afghan Charlie Chaplin who uses laughter as his only weapon in the fight against adversities. The film follows his life adventure and explores the issue of laughter in Afghanistan, and beyond.
The Mercury will be providing their usual refreshments which will be available to buy at the bar.
Raffle tickets will be on sale in the foyer for a number of lovely gift baskets and other prizes.
Please invite your family and friends.
All proceeds will go the Vocational Training Centre for Women and Girls in Kabul.
