LAUNCH LAB: Crafting Your Short Film Script

The first in the new suite of Launch Lab will focus on the art of writing and directing a compelling, well-crafted and award-winning short film.

Short films serve as a valuable stepping stone for filmmakers, offering a platform to enter the festival circuit and win awards that can propel them into feature filmmaking or long form television.

This lab will provide a deep dive into essential elements that make a short film stand out.

From strong characters and engaging plots to effective dialogue and visual language, this workshop will equip you with the tools to create an award-winning short film.

Bringing a wealth of experience, South Australian award winning writer and director Matt Vesely will facilitate this short film lab. Matt’s latest short, SYSTEM ERROR, was selected for the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and opened the 2021 St Kilda Film Festival. His debut feature film as a director, the science fiction thriller MONOLITH, was selected to have its international premiere at South By South West in 2023. 

In the afternoon, Matt will be joined by a panel of award-winning filmmakers – Matthew Thorne, Derik Lynch, Erin White, Alies Sluiter and Sean Lahiffwho will share their insights into the world of short filmmaking and the hidden gems behind crafting a short film that not only captivates audiences but also garners critical acclaim and international recognition.
